For the
first time in four years, the Northwest Junior Hockey League
has beaten the Manitoba Junior "B" Hockey League in
a playoff game.
The Nelson House NCN Flames went into the Mosienko Arena on
Saturday night and scored a 3-1 win over the North Winnipeg
Satelites in game one of the best of five provincial final designed
to determine the Manitoba representative at the Western Canadian
Junior "B" Hockey Championships in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan
next month.
Mike Malchuk made 27-saves and Shawn Libbey scored two goals
in the winning effort. Malchuk, a one-time member of the Satelites,
allowed a second period goal to Derek Rieu at 5:55; but was
otherwise perfect in turning aside 10-shots in the first period,
11-of-12 in the second, and 6 in the third.
Frankie Dicks, who tallied 16-goals in 6-playoff games in the
NJHL postseason, opened the scoring in this one at 19:21 of
the first period. Rieu tied it in the second, and then Libbey
scored the game winner at 8:52 of the final frame. Libbey also
scored into an empty net with 12-seconds remaining.
Mike Johnson, a playoff hero with the Satelites in helping fourth
place North Winnipeg knock off first place St. Claude and second
place Selkirk in capturing the MJBHL crown, turned away 38-shots.
Game two in the series will be played Sunday at Mosienko.
